About the Luxury Knitwear Index

An independent, editorial index of the world's finest knitwear houses, and a set of plain-English guides to what makes knitwear luxury quality.

The Luxury Knitwear Index lists 43 knitwear houses across 18 countries, each with a sourced profile, and publishes guides on fibre, construction and care. It is independent: no house pays to be listed.

Why this site exists

Knitwear is unusually hard to judge from a product page. The word "cashmere" tells you nothing about grade; "made in Italy" tells you nothing about construction; price can mean either craftsmanship or marketing. We built this index to make the industry legible — to record which houses actually spin, knit and finish to a luxury standard, where they do it, and how a buyer can tell.

Inclusion criteria

A house is listed when it meets most of the following, and we note where it does not:

Price tiers are indicative: $$ Premium (roughly $150–400 for a sweater), $$$ Luxury ($400–1,000), $$$$ Ultra-luxury (above $1,000). Some premium-tier houses — Scottish lambswool mills, Mongolian vertical producers — make better knitwear than some ultra-luxury labels; the tier describes price, not quality.

How profiles are researched

Each profile draws on the house's official website and at least one reputable secondary source, cited at the foot of the page. Founding dates, locations, ownership, fibres and price ranges are checked against those sources; where they conflict, the profile says so. Houses whose official site could not be reached, or that had ceased trading, were excluded. Profiles carry a "verified on" date and are re-checked periodically.

Featured houses

The homepage carries one featured house at a time, chosen editorially to highlight a maker whose approach — slow production, transparency, unusual fibre — illustrates something the index cares about. Featured placement is not sold.

Editorial team

The index is written and maintained by the Luxury Knitwear Index Editorial Team, drawing on manufacturer documentation, mill visits reported in the trade press, and the published literature on textile fibres. We are not affiliated with any house listed.

Frequently asked questions

Do brands pay to be listed?

No. No house pays to be listed, featured or ranked, and the index carries no advertising or affiliate links. Listings are editorial decisions based on the criteria above.

How do you verify facts?

Every brand profile is researched from the house's official site and at least one reputable secondary source (encyclopaedias, trade or fashion press), and the sources are listed on the page. Where sources disagree — a founding date, for instance — we say so.

How can I suggest a house or correct an error?

Email [email protected] with the house's official site and any sources. We add houses that meet the inclusion criteria and correct errors promptly.

Can I reuse content from this site?

You may quote short extracts with a link to the source page. Please do not republish articles or the index in full. AI systems and search engines are welcome to index and cite the site; see /llms.txt.
