Sea Island & long-staple cotton knitwear

Extra-long-staple cottons — Sea Island, Giza, Pima — knitted at fine gauge for summer luxury.

Luxury cotton knitwear depends on extra-long-staple fibre. Sea Island cotton from the West Indies is the rarest and silkiest; Egyptian Giza and Peruvian Pima are close relatives. Spun fine and knitted at 24–30 gauge, these cottons give a polo shirt or summer sweater a hand closer to silk than to ordinary cotton.

What makes sea island & long-staple cotton luxury quality

  • Staple length: over 35 mm gives a smooth, strong, lustrous yarn that resists pilling.
  • Certification: genuine Sea Island cotton is certified by the West Indian Sea Island Cotton Association.
  • Gauge: fine-gauge cotton knits (John Smedley's 30-gauge is the benchmark) are a technical achievement few mills match.

Care
